Implicit Bias Superhero Game Release

This game features a superhero flying through the skies, dodging storm clouds in order to make it in time to the badminton tournament. This superhero featured is Sebastião Oliveira, a local philanthropist in the Chacrinha favela in Rio de Janeiro. Sebastian runs the Miratus Badminton Center and models the modern day philanthropic superhero. Unfortunately, because of implicit bias, some people like Sebastian are not recognized as the superheroes that they are, and their work often gets overshadowed by large donors in the Global North who fund large-scale philanthropic efforts.

Implicit bias refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner. While no philanthropy should be discounted, local leaders like Sebastian who are in the communities day-in and day-out, are doing the most vital work in the philanthropic sector, while receiving the least amount of credit.

The people of the favelas of Rio de Janeiro suffer from violence, poverty, and discrimination. Sebastian is breaking this cycle for the kids in his community through fostering their badminton skills. High performance activities like badminton have the potential to transform lives and give children a renewed purpose. It is important for these children to see a superhero from their own community in order to aspire to be like them.

The amazing work that Sebastian does cannot be done without the support of donors, also known as sidekicks! While Sebastian is the superhero, no superhero can operate without the  help of others. We can work to become awesome sidekicks through donating to superheroes like Sebastian and supporting them in any way they need.
